Mini Projector Switcher

This is a description of a device used to run a projector in a room while also capturing what is shown on the projector for a recording or livestream.

Applications

When running a projector in a room during a conference, it is much nicer for the in-person audience to see something on the screen when the presenter removes their laptop, rather than the generic "no signal" screen from the projector.

Physical Inputs
  • HDMI 1 (Presenter Laptop)
  • HDMI 2 (Producer)
Outputs
  • HDMI 1 (Passthrough)
  • HDMI 2 (Switcher)
  • HDMI 3 (Projector)
Buttons/Switches
  • Capture: Saves a still frame from HDMI 1 into memory
  • Fallback Source: Toggles the fallback video source between Input 2 or the still image store
  • Input/Fallback/Auto: "Input" selects HDMI 1, "Fallback" selects the Fallback source, "Auto" automatically switches to Input 1 when a signal is detected
  • Switcher Source "Input/Fallback": toggles HDMI 2 between the Fallback source or Input 1
Video Sources
  • HDMI 1 (Presenter Laptop)
  • HDMI 2 (Producer)
  • Still image memory

Block Diagram

There are three source selectors on the device.

  • Switch 3: selects the fallback source from the still image store or Input 2.
  • Switch 2: switches the video sent to the projector and Switch 1 between the fallback source or Input 1.
  • Switch 1: switches the video sent to the main streaming video switcher between the projector feed or Input 1.

The three outputs are used for:

  • Output 1: A passthrough feed of the presenter's laptop on Input 1. This can feed a confidence monitor so they will always be able to see their screen.
  • Output 2: This goes into the main video switcher for recording or streaming.
  • Output 3: This feeds the projector in the room.
